New York City Police Department to accept etsy ads for free

NEW YORK — New York’s Metropolitan Police Department said Friday it will accept online advertising in lieu of an coupon code for a free birthday gift.

The department said in a statement that it has used coupons for several years, and the department’s policy allows for discounts on products and services when the department sells those products and/or services at lower prices.

The move comes amid growing pressure on the department to rein in the online advertising industry.

Earlier this year, the NYPD issued a memo saying that any ad posted on an e-commerce website is subject to the department rules.

That memo was later rescinded and an internal investigation was launched, according to the New York Post.

In March, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner William Bratton announced a partnership on a plan to reduce online ad revenue by 25 percent.

They said the city will take the lead in creating a program to help businesses cut down on the online ads that make up so much of their business.
