AUSTRALIA’S NRL star Jack Bird has just one more game left in his illustrious career, with the Canberra Raiders hoping he can keep up his incredible form at the top level for the foreseeable future.
Bird has enjoyed his best form in 2016, scoring four tries and adding a further five assists for the Raiders, who are currently sitting in third spot in the ladder, five points behind the Dragons.
“I’m looking forward to getting back to my best,” Bird told reporters at the end of the NRL Telstra Premiership match against the Dragons in Townsville on Sunday night.
“It’s been a fantastic run, it’s been great to be a part of.”
You go out and play and play, you don’t want to stop, you want to keep going and playing, and it’s just been a great ride.
“This year, the opportunity to come back and have a couple of games is a big deal for me, especially in my career, I’m sure it will be a great year for me.”
Bird is enjoying his best years with the Raiders as the club’s highest-paid player.
Bird was paid $2.5 million for 2016, the most in the NRL at the time, and is the highest-profile Raiders player to be paid more than $1 million.
The 27-year-old has been playing alongside superstar winger Sam Burgess for more than a decade and is known as the “King of the Jungle”.
The two-time Grand Finalist was one of the best halves in the game in 2016 when he kicked 27 goals and collected 21 assists for his third season with the Roosters.
The Roostals are on track to be one of just four teams in the top eight this year and Bird is one of two players in the squad that is not contracted to the Rooster Roosts.
The Raiders will play their first game of the season against the North Queensland Cowboys on Saturday at AAMI Stadium.
Bird said he would be a fan of the Cowboys.
“Playing for the Cowboys is something I love doing,” Bird said.
“They’ve been through some rough times, but I’m just hoping I can keep getting better and get a few more games in.”
Hopefully, I can have a good year and maybe play some games next year.
“Bird said the club was trying to add more players in free agency, but was unable to do so due to the NRL lockout.”
There’s been quite a few clubs in the free agency market, we’re trying to get more players and we’re hoping to get a couple more in,” Bird added.
Bird played eight games in 2016 and had an impressive season, kicking nine goals and collecting seven assists.
